Uncle John's Band [6:59] Lineage unknown, but believed to be: SBD:MR> Cass.> DAT> Cass.> PCM > CD-R (10" 2-track reel master> 1 cassette generation> DAT> 1 cassette generation> circulation) Listed at www.resourcesfortraders.com This is a speed corrected and restored version of the complete 4-disc set that is circulating. It replaces that set and an older 3-disc version that cut off during "Comes A Time". The 4-disc source was missing the beginning of "Dark Star" and "He's Gone". Those parts were restored using clips from the 3-disc set. Also restored was a short blurb from Weir at the end of "Morning Dew". "Ramble On Rose" has been moved to the beginning of disc 3 where it belongs. Detailed notes on the restoration are below. Thanks to terrapinstation for providing the newer 4-disc set that this was based on. Mick (Unicorn) Posted to abgdhs 04/2003 by Unicorn ** Restoration notes ** Source tapes: Source A - A complete version of the show and the primary source for this recording, but the beginning of "Dark Star" and "He's Gone" are missing. Tape speed is fast by .95% to 1.5%. Volume levels on most tracks had been pushed to the point that there is digital clipping, although it is largely inaudible. Disk 1 has several clicks. Source B - A 178 minute version that ends part way through "Comes A Time", but with a complete "Dark Star" and "He's Gone". The volume levels are 7 dB lower than Source A, there is more tape hiss, and it runs 2.25% slow. Both of theses sources came, ultimately, from the same soundboard tape. For this restoration, I used Cool Edit Pro as my WAV editor. Also used were Sonic Foundry's Clipped Peak Restoration tool from Noise Reduction 2.0a, and Wave's X-Noise noise reduction tool from Restoration Bundle 1.0. Noise reduction was done only on the missing parts of "Dark Star" and "He's Gone" from Source B. All tracks had the DC Offset corrected to zero. And most of the tracks were run through Clipped Peak Restoration with the post-limiter enabled. The speed correction probably won't be noticeable to anyone but musicians who try to play along with the music. Silence that was removed was actual silence, not quiet time between songs. Finally, I changed no EQ settings or volume levels except on the clips from Source B. * Disc 1 (all tracks slowed by 1.25% except T13, 1.5%) -D1T01: Removed click at 3:08 -D1T03: Removed click at 4:04 -D1T06: Removed click at 4:40 -D1T07: Smoothed tape transition at 4:40 -D1T10: Removed 18 seconds of silence at the end of the track and a 2.3 second clip that was a repeat of the beginning of "China Cat Sunflower". How it ended up here I'll never know. -D1T11: Removed clicks at 2:40 & 2:47 & 2:54 -D1T13: Removed 2 minutes 48 seconds of silence at the end of the track * Disc 2 (all tracks slowed by 1.5%) -D2T02: Smoothed tape transition at 3:19 slowed 1.75% -D2T03: Remove 7.4 seconds of redundant sound at 4:54, slowed 1.75% -D2T04: Removed 0.3 second of redundant sound at 0:18.6 * Disc 3 (all tracks slowed by .95%) -D3T01: Remove 2 minutes 39 seconds of silence at the end of the track -D3T02: After speeding up Source B 2.25%, boosting volume levels 7 dB, and applying noise reduction and EQ, the first 1:13 was pasted onto the beginning of the Source A "Dark Star". Not quite as seamless as the "He's Gone" patch due to differences in the stereo fields of the two sources, but still pretty darn good. -D3T03 Source B had this line from Weir tagged on at the end of this track. I cleaned it up as best I could and added it to Source A. "We're gonna pause for a moment, and scratch our asses and drink a little cold and wet liquid." * Disc 4 (T01 & T02 slowed by 1.25%, the rest by .95%) -D4T01: Speed up Source B 2.25%, boosted levels 7 dB and applied noise reduction to match Source B to Source A. Patched 39 seconds, the intro and 1st verse, from Source B onto the beginning of Source A. The splice is undetectable except for a subtle shift of the vocal in the stereo field. -D4T06: Removed 34 seconds of silence at the end.
